Wow! What a fantastic first week of school!! I think this one will be unforgettable :) I have had so much fun getting to know each and every student this week! We are well into the normal routines of school and everything is going really well! Thank you for your support and the many items off our wish list. Spelling City-Students should have brought home their first spelling list today for next week. You may also review their spelling words for Unit 1 under my Reading and Writing Tab (above). Class Dojo- please make sure you are signed up on my Class Dojo. This is my number one form of communication and I love posting pictures, so that you may see what happens in our classroom. August 29- Fundraiser Assembly There will not be school on Friday, September 1st and Monday, September 4th.

I hope your child had a fantastic first two days in fourth grade! It was great to get to know each and every child during that time, and I can't wait for our adventures together this school year!
Some important dates for this week include: Monday-We are going to have a "Solar Eclipse Day". Students will be involved in several different solar eclipse activities. We will also be viewing the eclipse from 1:00-1:30. **Don't forget that Monday is early out, so students will be dismissed at 3:00 PM. Tuesday-Friday: We will begin our regular routine with our learning, and also start looking at The Leader In Me. Students will be making a Leader In Me notebook on Tuesday and Wednesday. I am asking that they bring in magazines, pictures, stickers, or anything they want that represents how to be a better person or leader. **T-shirt money is due by Friday for the Leader In Me Friday shirts. Please let me know if you need me to send home another order form. Students should have brought home their MAP scores from last year in their backpack on Friday. They were all really excited to see how they did. DOJO: We will start using Class DOJO on Monday to track behavior. Students will be bringing home their binder daily with their DOJO points in it. In order for students to receive their DOJO money for their positive points earned they have to get their folder signed at least one time during the week. This is just a way to help keep the kids accountable for showing their folder to you all! Wow!! Where has this year gone?! First, I want to congratulate the students in 4th grade for all their hard work during our MAP testing! They rocked the test, and I am beyond proud of them!
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity of teaching your child this year! I adore each and every one of my students and will miss them so much, but I look forward to seeing them grow in the upcoming years!! Writing- In writing students have been working on informational text and writing biographies. Students have been working on biographies on a famous scientist of their choice. We will begin writing our famous Missourian writing piece next week. Students have also been working on ABC Alliteration books the last two weeks, during our Figurative Language Unit. Reading- In reading we have been working on non-fiction text features, reading non-fiction text articles, main ideas and details, and researching non-fiction materials. Students have worked really hard on creating their animal research projects, please make sure to ask your child about their presentation. Math- In math we have just started our fraction unit. Students have been working on equivalent fractions this week. If your child ever has a redo paper in their binder, please go over this with them and return it back to school. Don't forget about the new app that can help with your student's math assignments and homework pages. Science/Social Studies- We completed our Rocks, Soil, and Minerals Unit in science last week. Students had a blast at our Rock Quarry field trip. We began our Westward Expansion unit in social studies this week and will continue this for the month of February. Students have chosen a Pioneer name and will complete their "westward traveling" experiences in their Pioneer journals. Our Jefferson City field trip will be on Wednesday, May 17. Monday, Jan. 16th NO School - MLK Jr. Day - Possible snow make up In the Classroom... Reading: We will begin our non-fiction research projects this month. In this unit students will learn how to critically think about the non-fiction text and what is the purpose of a particular author. Students, with the help of non-fiction text features, will become experts in their field of study. Math: Use Operations with Whole Numbers to Solve Word Problems and Factors and Multiples Writing: Informational/Expository Essays, our first one will be on a famous scietist Science: Soil, Rocks, and Minerals Parents -Thank you for coming to Parent - Teacher conferences. In the classroom... Math- We are just about to wrap up our unit on double digit multiplication. Students should be able to solve a problem like this: 38 x 29. We will take the unit 4 math assessment on Monday, November 21st. Most of the questions have 2 or more steps. This is a challenging test and we will complete it in two sessions. We will begin division when we return from Thanksgiving break. Reading - Just a reminder that students are expected to read 60 minutes each week. Please initial each time they read on their book-it calendar. We are working on lots of nonfiction this month such as: context clues, main ideas, author's purpose, and sequence of events in nonfiction books. Writing - This quarter we are writing an opinion essay. Students are creating their own opinion on something they would like to see changed at school. Social Studies - We are learning about Missouri's History through the first explorers, the Louisiana Purchase, and the famous expedition that Lewis and Clark led in 1803. Important Dates: 11/23-25- Thanksgiving Break 12/2-Tiger Pride Assembly 12/13- 4th Grade Music Program 12/21-Early Out 12/22-1/4-Christmas Break In the Classroom... Math: We are learning (and reviewing) how to multiply whole numbers through the thousands place. For example: 4,356*7. Students should also practice their multiplication facts. Please review with you child their multiplication facts by using flash cards. Multiplication.com is also an excellent resource to help students fluently practice their facts. (Parents can access math videos and worksheets at home, go to the math tab, Pearson link, and have your child share their username and login.) Writing: Students have finished their final personal narrative essay. They have worked hard on good beginnings and good endings. Science: We are wrapping up our unit on ecosystems. Students worked extra hard on creating their ecosystems in class! They all turned out wonderful! We will begin our Social Studies unit and work on Map Skills and the Missouri Land Regions. Reading: Last week, we finished all reading assessments and started small groups. Although, 4th graders do not have regular reading homework, please have your child set up a nightly reading routine. It is extremely helpful to have your child read aloud and discuss what they read with you. Please ask questions and dig deep into what they are reading. Students greatly benefit from parents/family members reading aloud as they follow along. Homework: Reading - 60 minutes each week. ***Remember to help fill out your students Book It Calendar. Red Ribbon Week will be Oct. 24-28
The theme will be "I Elect to be Drug Free!" Dress up days: Monday- "I elect to be drug free!" Wear Red, White, and Blue Tuesday- "Be a Superhero, just say no" Superhero attire Wednesday- "Drugs Hurt" Fake injury day Thursday-"Drugs get in the way of your dreams" PJ Day Friday- "Willard Tigers say no to drugs" Wear your tiger gear Students will begin their Ecosystem Shoe Boxes on Monday. If you still have any extra shoe boxes, please send those in. Students can create their own animals and bring in materials for this. Examples would be; sticks, rocks, grass clippings, hay, sand, brown sugar, salt, sugar, cotton balls, etc. (depending on their ecosystem). Students need to have at least 7 different types of animals and 3 different types of plants. They can create their animals by printing pictures, cutting pictures out of magazines, stickers, making them out of pipe cleaners, drawing their own, making them from clay, or if they want to bring animal figurines from home that is okay too. You DO NOT have to buy anything unless you absolutely want to. Students will make these at school starting Monday. Students should be creative with this activity and have fun. If you google "ecosystem shoe boxes you can see a variety of examples.
What a fabulous week in 4th grade!
This week students have been practicing adding, subtracting, and estimating whole numbers in math. For example: 4,085 + 2,193. Students are regrouping and borrowing. Students should also practice subtracting across zeros. For example: 3,000 - 1,675. We will test over these topics on Tuesday, September 27. Students have completed their rough draft for their personal narrative writing piece. We will begin to revise and edit these next week. Students are also learning about making inferences and referring to detail in a text. In science we have been learning a lot about ecosystems, habitats, producers, consumers, food chains, and food webs.
